Insurance
Does my insurance provide coverage at the track?
Proper insurance coverage for your vehicle is entirely your responsibility. Neither The Drivers Coach nor its instructors carry insurance on your vehicle; the only potential coverage is under your existing automobile policy, or an optional motorsport collision insurance policy (called “Track Day Insurance”).
About General Automobile Insurance Policies in Puerto Rico
We are no insurance experts, but It is our opinion and understanding that, with respect to the coverage you have under your existing automobile policy, they WILL exclude coverage where the automobile is involved in “any race or speed test”. Our programs are Performance Driver Education focused and We do not consider our events to be a race or a speed test. We purposely do not time participants in our events, do not allow wheel-to-wheel competition, and do not award prizes or rank participants in any manner. Our legal council advises that our event format DOES NOT EXCLUDE you from insurance coverage.
However, we cannot dictate how your insurance company may interpret our events relative to the policy wording or how long the fight will be.
Plus it is a bit of a Catch 22 — if you call and ask the insurer to confirm your coverage, they will almost certainly tell you that your policy does not cover track days. We believe that if you checked the exclusions they should not deny you coverage, but once your insurer has told you that you do not have coverage it becomes very hard to go backwards and make a claim. And if you press the issue, it is likely your insurer will cancel your policy. So, this is the catch 22, it is virtually impossible to confirm if you have coverage.
About Track Day Insurance
There is an insurance product designed specifically to provide collision coverage to street-licensed vehicles being driven at track days, and it has recently become available in some parts of the USA and Canada but then again you will need to do your own research or call your insurer... Catch 22 again... The principle benefits of this coverage are:
1) It is a no-fault coverage that will be paid out regardless of how the incident occurs; and
2) A claim on your Track Day policy does not affect your other vehicles, or your other policies, or your future rates.
For an idea on how this might work and more information on what is covered do a "Track Day Insurance" Google search.
